And Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God. Ruth 1:16

Behold the handmaid of the Lord. She who in her love and obedience forsook all, even the gods of her fathers. Ruth is an amazing model for each and every one of us.

We remember from the Book of Ruth the narrative concerning Ruth, the Moabite, the death of her husband, and her faithful obedience to her Mother-in-law Naomi, to whom she pledged unfailing loyalty. Is it possible to find this faith in our day?

Ruth has become a remarkable model for us – a blessed example of the blessings that await us when we persevere in our faith and trust in our Lord. As we see with the righteous Ruth, plans changed drastically for the path her life would take. When she married, she must have felt comfortable knowing that the rest of her life was going according to a plan she longed for – a husband, a home, a family, and stability. Though she left was known and comfortable in her homeland, she sought the comfort of family life.

In short time things changed quite drastically for her. We can only imagine the anguish and sorrow that filled her heart. But, she did not despair. Even to the point of homelessness she followed Naomi. Truly, the love of God permeated Naomi and impressed Ruth. Through these difficult times, our Lord was cleansing her and preparing her for greater things.

In the end, Ruth’s faithfulness brought her reward as she found favor with our Lord. Her great-grandson David would sit on the throne of Israel and receive the promise that the sceptre shall not depart from his family.

Such blessings await each of us when we cling to our Lord and seek after Him continually. He will never forsake those who earnestly seek after Him.
