Chapter 3 On humility
I was very keen to learn what the life of those who serve God wholeheartedly was like. So, when I was younger, I like to leave through the works of the Holy Fathers, and I saw their interstate. They themselves describe this. You see, we only live on the outside, and we see the stream of life passing by. However the inner life of every individual is not the same.
I had a desire to learn about the inner life of those who had lived a perfect life here on earth and you are glorified by God both here and in eternity. It was then that I realized, as the Holy Father themselves explained, that the perfection of the Christian life consists in extreme humility.
When should preach not from one’s rational mind but rather from the heart. Only that which is from the heart can touch another heart. One must never attack repose anyone. If he who preaches must help people to keep away from a certain kind of evil, he must do some equally and humbly, with fear of God.
We must suffer much in our hearts until we learn humility. The Lord is standing by your side, allowing us to feel pain beneath our left rib so that all the stench can come out. And all we say is, “so and so has offended me straight through the heart; this cannot be forgiven!” how can we not forget, when we are the same as they are? How many times have we offended our fellow men? Well we must learn to keep my peace. Until you have suffered much in your holy Father say that unless we humble ourselves, the Lord will not stop humbling us. He will use someone in order to humble us. Someone will provoke our anger and do it until we learn to remain calm and peaceful when provoked. When we can stay calm when someone attacks us from all sides, when we can keep our inner peace in spite of that person’s rudeness, then our soul will become meek and humble and and we will live this life with a full understanding of it inner nearest will tell us, “you have changed; you use to have a fiery temperament, but now you have somehow become calm and dispassionate .” But we have not become dispassionate . Rather this is how the victory over evil manifest itself.
Man is a great mystery. We often marvel at this mystery and wonder how it is that our bodies function without are willing it. There is no institution or organization on this whole planet that can function as perfectly as the human body.
God is a mystery to all beings. God is an ass, and that is why we are a mystery to our own selves. God reveals Himself only to the meek and humble. He is present everywhere, and he is a mystery. We made learn a little about him, or we may gather some knowledge from nature, but for the most part, we are surrounded by mystery.
When a person is meek and humble, he will advance in knowledge.
Look at us, as soon as our mood changes, we no longer speak kindly toward our fellow men, but instead we answer them sharply. We only make things worse by doing this. When we are dissatisfied, the whole atmosphere between us become sour, and we start to offend one another. No matter what people do or say to us, we must be meek and forgive every offense.
we think we know a lot, but what we know is very little. Even those who have striven all their lives to bring progress to mankind – blended scientists and highly educated people – all realize in the end that all their knowledge is but a grain of sand on the seashore. All our archievements are insufficient.
Humility is a divine property and the perfection of the Christian life. It is attained through obedience. He who is not obedient cannot attain humility. There are very few in the world today who have obedience. Our humility is in proportion to our obedience.
Physical, out with humility is easier to attain that in a few military, humility of the mind. That is a special gift. Our holy Father Simeon says that a person who attained humility of the mind cannot be hurt by anything in the world. Whatever happens, such a person is always at peace. This is truly a divine property.
Pride, too, has its levels, just like humility. Outward pride it’s easier to cure, but pride for the mind it’s almost impossible to educate. No one can prove to such a person that he is on the wrong track. But I would pride is curable, because one can go from riches to rags in the twinkling of an eye and become humble whether he wants to or not!
Meekness means having a heart that is humble and peaceful. Children are meat. This is why the Lord says, “if you do not become as children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.”
A proud person is never satisfied: everything bothers him and he follows his own will. We must be obedient to the will of God in order to learn humility and meekness while we are still in this life, while there is still time. Heart that is full of love thanks not of itself but of others. He prays for all things and for the whole world.
The holy Fathers say that he was born meek has already received his reward, but his reward will not be as great as that of the man who was born with a quick temper and who has learned meekness to humility. Such a person will receive a great reward indeed.
Question: how can we consider created matter to be better than us if God has in doubt us with a rational mind and has called us his sons?
Answer: if you place your hand over your heart and are entirely sincere with yourself, you will realize that you are indeed less than many creative things. Look at the bee how diligently it labors! It gives of itself without reserve, unsparingly. The life span of a be is a month and a half at the most. It off and dies working without going back to his home, the hive. And we? How we pity ourselves and spare ourselves! Or, look at the end to us never tired of dragging a heavy burden. Even when its burden falls down, the ant patiently picks it up and goes on with its work. As for us we give up immediately if things do not go the way we want them to go!
